Newton Chamber of Commerce and NAST working together to keep our Town Centre Safe
Newton Abbot Security Trust (NAST) operates the town CCTV system, a network of 35 cameras which cover the town centre areas, and a Radio link system which has 50 Radio members.
The CCTV system has a central control room which is actively monitored 6 days a week, and records activity 24/7. This system helps keep the town safe and secure, by following potential criminal activity, so the NAST team can alert the police and their intervention prevents that activity taking place. It is also useful in bringing criminals to justice who have been caught on camera, shoplifting, or antisocial behaviour, traffic offences etc.
The CCTV cameras can assist with community matters such as finding lost children and giving support to vulnerable people. All good!
NAST is overseen by Tom Hurst who is the security manager for the town centre and is based at Austins department store. Tom works closely with the security staff in stores and pubs across the town centre and with edge of town retailers at Penn Inn and Kingsteignton.
We have links with EBACS, Exeter business against crime, which is part of a nationwide information sharing network and forward information which is highly relevant to town centre security, we also share information with security staff at Paignton and Torquay.
NAST is a “not for profit” limited company. There is a board of directors who are appointed by Newton Abbot and District Chamber of Commerce and Newton Abbot Town Council.
Historically the CCTV project was funded by Teignbridge District Council (TDC), but due to budget cuts their support ceased. Since then the Chamber of Commerce and the Town Council have been helping fund and manage the system, supporting NAST as they develop and improve this really valuable community service.
Funding comes from the Radio link members, and there is some income from the monitoring of various external cameras. In addition, and crucially, donations have been received on a regular basis from the Town Council and the Chamber of Commerce.
NAST is a volunteer run organisation and we are always looking for help – if you think you might be able to join us in the control room and you would like to be part of something that brings value, security and a sense of well-being to our town centre then please contact us on email
