Volunteer President
We are looking for a new President With a big thanks to David Austin who has held this position for many year, he is focusing more time on other interest with Austins and the town – we now have this vacancy to help us keep pushing the chamber forward whilst remaining current and expressing the views of the business community of Newton Abbo
Purpose of the Role
The President serves as the Chamber’s senior ambassador and public representative, promoting the interests of the local business community and supporting the Chamber’s long-term vision and objectives. Working collaboratively with the Chair, Vice Chair, and Executive Committee, the President provides guidance, advocacy, and visibility for the organisation while maintaining a largely non-operational role.
The President is not responsible for the day-to-day management of the Chamber but supports its success through leadership, influence, community engagement, and strategic input.
Key Responsibilities
Ambassador and Representative
- Act as a prominent advocate for the Chamber and its members.
- Represent the Chamber at key business, civic, and community events where appropriate.
- Promote the Chamber’s mission, values, and activities within the local business community.
- Support the development of positive relationships with businesses, local authorities, community groups, and other stakeholders.
Collaborative Leadership
- Work closely with the Chair to support the strategic direction of the Chamber.
- Provide advice, guidance, and an independent perspective to the Chair, Vice Chair, and Executive Committee.
- Act as a trusted ambassador who can help strengthen the Chamber’s profile and influence.
- Support leadership succession and encourage future Chamber leaders.
Governance and Support
- Attend Board or Executive Committee meetings when invited or appropriate.
- Offer guidance on significant initiatives and long-term priorities.
- Support the Chamber in maintaining good governance and adherence to its constitution and bylaws.
- Act as a sounding board for the Chair and Executive Committee on matters affecting the Chamber.
Annual General Meeting
- Preside over and chair the Chamber’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).
- Welcome members and stakeholders attending the AGM.
- Support the Chair and Executive Committee in presenting the Chamber’s achievements, objectives, and future plans.
- Encourage member participation and engagement during the AGM.
Advocacy and Community Engagement
- Champion issues that support local businesses and economic growth.
- Promote collaboration between Chamber members and local organisations.
- Help raise awareness of the Chamber’s activities and achievements within the community.
What the President Does Not Do
- Does not manage the Chamber’s day-to-day operations.
- Does not oversee routine administration, finances, or membership services.
- Does not supervise staff or volunteers unless specifically authorised by the Board.
- Does not replace or duplicate the governance responsibilities of the Chair, Vice Chair, or Executive Committee.
Expected Time Commitment
The position is intentionally designed to be flexible and manageable.
Typical commitment:
- Approximately 2-4 hours per month.
- Attendance at the Annual General Meeting.
- Attendance at selected Chamber events throughout the year.
- Occasional meetings or discussions with the Chair and Executive Committee as required.
Role Statement
The President is the Chamber’s principal ambassador and advocate, working in partnership with the Chair to promote the organisation, support its strategic objectives, and strengthen its relationships within the business and wider community. The President chairs the Annual General Meeting and provides guidance, visibility, and influence while remaining independent of the Chamber’s day-to-day operations.
